Facing off at our San José City Council District 4 Candidate Forum will be David Cohen, Huy Tran and Jamal Khan.

David Cohen has called District 4 his home. For the past 13 years, he has served on the Berryessa Union School District Board as an elected trustee, where he focused on building strong relationships with local families, teachers, staff and students. His focus on the board was making sure the District provided the best opportunities for students of all backgrounds to succeed. He led numerous programs and policies that have made the Berryessa Union School District one of the best K-8 school districts in the Bay Area. Huy Tran was born in Hawthorne, California to refugees who escaped Da Nang by boat. Huy graduated from SJSU in 2005, but like many young people, he struggled-he was working, but became unhoused. After working shifts as a bellman or bussing tables, Huy’s housing stabilized and he returned to community organizing, including with Vietnamese youth and families in North San José, and eventually law school, graduating from Santa Clara University School of Law in 2012. He is a co-founder of Justice at Work Law Group, dedicated to fighting for San José’s and Santa Clara County’s working families on employment issues, including wage theft, harassment, and discrimination. Their firm’s reputation grew, earning a distinction as the 2016 California Senate District 15 Small Business of the Year Award.

Jamal Khan completed his K-12 education in public schools right here in District 4: Laneview Elementary School, Morrill Middle School, and Independence High School, where he graduated as a valedictorian. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he triple majored in Economics, Political Science, and Rhetoric, and minored in Global Poverty and Practice. During his time as an undergraduate, Jamal interned for Speaker Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco district office, the nonprofit transparency organization MapLight, and a bankruptcy attorney. Jamal attended Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He served as the Managing Technical Editor of the Harvard Human Rights Journal. He was also the Communications Chair of the South Asian Law Students Association and the President of the Muslim Law Students Association. During the summer breaks, he interned in Washington, DC for the US Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations and the Office of Government Ethics.

    Womxn’s March 2020

As in years past, the Silicon Valley Democratic Club is proud to sponsor advertising for the 2020 Womxn’s March on Jan 18. We are grateful for the kind and generous donation from SVDC member, David Donaldson and the artistry of LezLi Logan so that we could place four color ½-page ads in the San José Mercury News. Ads will run on January 6, 9, 13 and 16.

Now is NOT the time to stop marching. There are more reasons than ever before to keep on marching. It is our hope to help make this year’s march the biggest ever. Join us on January 18 at 11am starting at San José City Hall.

Our Power Counts - Womxn's March - Jan 18, 2020 at 11am in Downtown San Jose

    Womxn’s March: No it’s not a typo!

Naava Ellenberg, one of the co-leads for this year’s march explains the spelling of this year’s Womxn’s March (from the San José Mercury News, Dec. 27, 2019):

“This year, on Jan. 18, San José will be holding our 4th annual Womxn’s March. That is not a typo. The “x” is to declare that the march is a space welcoming of individuals who are nonbinary and gender nonconforming. For too long, these voices have been excluded from feminist spaces and it is time for that to change. If feminism is not intersectional, it is not really feminism. If we are not actively including all voices in our movement, it is not a worthy movement.

“Changing a letter is more than a branding decision; it is a commitment to inclusivity. It is a clear and definitive articulation of our values. This year’s March will be the strongest demonstration of our power yet, as we lift up every member of our community in our calls for justice.

“This year’s March boasts the theme “Our Power Counts.” Whether it is your voice, your vote, or even your presence, you deserve to be valued and you deserve to be counted.”
