THE DEMOCRATIC VOICE

New Year. New Name. New Meeting Venue.

Happy New Year!

By an overwhelming margin, our club membership voted to rename the Santa Clara County Democratic Club; it is now the Silicon Valley Democratic Club (SVDC).

Mark your calendars and plan to attend our first General Meeting of the New Year:

When: Monday, January 21, 2019
Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for those interested in joining us for dinner
The SVDC General Meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Where: Mayuri Indian Cuisine
2232 El Camino Real (about 2 blocks east of San Thomas Expwy) Santa Clara, CA.
(Mayuri Cuisine is a fine 4-star restaurant.  A no-host Indian buffet is available for $17.50 that includes chicken, lamb and vegetarian options.  The meal price includes salads, dessert and a non-alcoholic beverage.  Also, a no host bar will be offering a limited selection of wine and beer.)

(As many of you have learned, our former venue, Harry’s Hofbrau has permanently closed for redevelopment.)

Our speaker will be Rich Constantine, Mayor of Morgan Hill. The topic of his speech is “Democracy:  The Great Experiment Continues”.

Elected in November 2018, Constantine is Morgan Hill's first African-American Mayor. Rich has demonstrated through out his entire adult life a commitment to community service and seeks to continue that legacy as a city council member.

Admission is FREE. Everyone is welcome. RSVP NOT Required.

A Note from President Art Cohen

SVDC’s 2018 ended on a high note at the club’s 37th Anniversary Holiday Party with numerous Democratic luminaries including Steve Preminger as Master of Ceremonies and guest speaker Cindy Chavez, Santa Clara County Supervisor District 2, and Santa Clara County Supervisor, Ken Yeager.   To add to the excitement there were two additional special guests:  San Jose Mayor, Sam Liccardo and newly elected Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis.   SVDC had a part in turning important congressional districts in California blue! The Democratic Party gained control of the House and now have a voice at the national level to stop the GOP attacks and to hold the executive branch accountable for their potential crimes. Democratic wins in California Senate races ensured a super-majority for incoming Governor Gavin Newsom.

We also recognized local heroes at our Holiday Party.  Both Jennie Wentworth and Lydia Jungking were recognized by our County Party Chair, Bill James.  They received the “Impact Award” which was well deserved.  Lydia’s emotional speech was moving as she explained how she had to overcome fear and potential retribution to courageously call out the sexual harassment she endured while attending high school.   I was honored to have the opportunity to listen and meet her.   We also recognized our own outgoing president, Rob Means and Shirely Odou for lifetime achievements as co-founder of the club.

2019 is the year to build on the midterm election wins and prepare for taking back the Senate to stop the GOP administration from taking control of the Supreme Court.

Congratulations to our newly elected Executive Board and Officers (listed below) that better represents the diversity of our club and our community. I commend all these volunteers giving their time and energy to help organize the many events, programs and activities we will be having throughout the year.

New committees in 2019 are forming now!  At the general meeting there will be an opportunity to sign up for various Committees including:  Meetings and Setup, Programming, Endorsements, Events, Communications, Newsletter, Membership, Fundraising, Environment, and Women’s Caucus.   If you have a special issue or passion, please email me about the new committee you want to form.

I highly recommend seeing the movie VICE. This movie covers the period of time Chaney becomes Vice President and the treacherous path to power he took that has lead in part to the mess that is in Washington DC today.   I look forward to seeing you on MLK day January 21st!

Jean Barrett 1926-2019

In Remembrance of Jean Scovel Lindstrom Barrett

May 13, 1926 – January 1, 2019
Loving wife of William Barrett

SVDC Member Jean Scovel Lindstrom Barrett passed away peacefully at Brookdale San Jose on Tuesday, January 1 of 2019.  Her husband William was at her side. Jean served on the board of directors of the History Museums of San Jose from 1992 to 1996.  She also organized and taught a course in manners to several small groups of teenagers, from her home in San Jose. She loved to organize elaborate dinners in the style of the 19th century English barons, and to craft elaborate gilded-age dresses, hats and accessories. A remembrance event will be held on February 2 at Brookdale San Jose, 2-4pm (Click HERE for more details).  While a card or note would be welcome, the family requests no gifts or flowers be sent. Jean had many charities, including the Marine Mammal Institute, Earth Justice, Sierra Club, etc. to name a few.  Please consider a donation to one of these, or a similar charity.
