    SVDC Eboard Meeting - 1/23/19

    In attendance:

    1. President Art Cohen Opens Meeting at 7:00 PM

    2. Additions and Modifications to the Agenda
    Adding MOE access to #5. Adding venue discussion to #6.

    3. Eboard Snacks and Sign-Up
    Jennie Hutchinson will distribute snack schedule.

    4. Approval of November Board Meeting Minutes
    Remove Ed Cobb’s name from ‘Club Events, December Event and Setup.’ Motion to amend minutes as per above and approve by Ed Cobb; seconded by David Donaldson; motion passes (no NOs, LezLi Logan and Sita Stukes abstain).

    5: Treasurer’s Report:
    Bill submitted his report. Summary for 11/28/18 - 1/23/19

    • Administrative Account: $3,097.98
    • Federal: $245.04
    • State Account: $182.25
    • Cash: $18.85
    • Postage: $386.75
    • Total: $3,930.87
    • Total last period: $5,598.89

    Approval of Jan General Meeting minutes. Motion to approve by Michele Dauber; seconded by Ed Cobb; passes unanimously (no NOs, no absententions).

    6. Addition #1: Venue Discussion

    First meeting at Mayuri Indian restaurant. Dinner should be ready at 6:00 PM as stated. Eliminate club/members collecting money for meals. Increase price to include tip; $20? Committee to find new permanent location due to possible restaurant closing for redevelopment. David Donaldson, Fred Rehhausser, Marika Krause, Cathy Williams to launch search with help of Theresa O’Neill. Eboard members should spread out and sit at all tables to interact with members.

    7. General Meeting Minutes:

    Suggestion to title minutes “General Meeting Summary. Motion to approve by Michele Dauber, seconded by Jeff Orloff; passes unanimously (no NOs, no abstentions)

    8. Club Events: July Picnic

    Need for more committee members. Current location limited to 70 attendees. Make contact with venue to inquire about dates.

    9. Environment Committee Update: SB100

    CA to be 100% renewable by 2050. Want to create forum to educate. Addition of Coyote Valley Preservation.

    10. Newsletter:

    Deadline for submissions is February 5th, 2019 to Fred and Jeff. Deadline to LezLi is February 7th, 2019 for distribution on or before February 13th. Components: President’s message, next meeting with info/agenda, upcoming events. Place submissions in Google drive folder.

    10.5. MOE Access:

    David Donaldson would like password. Suggestion to club president has access to database. Access available from Bill James. Basic service is no-cost. Everyone who gets password must have approval from Bill James. Art Cohen needs to contact Bill James for basic access and possible higher level access.

    11. Addition #2: Transition

    Revision of transition time period. Website still under development and progressing. Payment discussion for Wild Apricot. Move ahead with domain hosting, merchant account; establishing Google phone number, emails for the board; goal to have total membership uploaded for February newsletter distribution. Two payment options, 3 months of Apricot at higher rate, 12 months of Apricot saving $9/month. LezLi motions to approve expenditure for 12 months subscription to Wild Apricot and 12 months subscription to Quickbooks using club credit card at an estimated total cost of $1182; seconded by Jeff Orloff; motion passes unanimously (no NOs, no abstentions).

    12. Resolution Denouncing NFL

    NFL has suspended rule requirement that players stand of be absent during the National Anthem. Michele will send email to Bill James inquiring if Santa Clara County Party will take up issue.

    13. ADEM Updates:

    Several SVDC members won, should be listed in newsletter. Michele will compile list. Recognize SVDC members who ran but did not win. AD 24 and AD 30 this upcoming weekend.

    14. Programs/Speakers:

    Programs committee meeting on 1/27. Email speaker suggestions to Jennie Hutchinson. Art Cohen has reached out to Kimberly Ellis several times. Kay Patrice Williams scheduled to speak in February. Ben Field scheduled to speak in March. Sam Liccardo possibly available to speak in June. Michele to reach out to Eleni Kounakis and Magdalena Carrasco.

    15. Endorsement Committee Update:

    No report.

    16. Recap on Women’s March and Women’s Caucus

    Recap provided during January general meeting.

    17. Meeting with Martin McTaggert on 2/12

    Regarding all-mail in ballots.

    18. Report from Central Committee:

    No report.

    19. Communications:

    How to handle incoming calls. Calls will be directed to President and Vice-President.

    20. Advertising Update:

    No update.

    21. Membership/Phone Banking:

    Recruit new members.

    22. Meeting with Andy Wang on 1/27:

    Presidential candidate.

    23. Facebook Promotion/Integration with New Website:

    Ed needs pictures from Marika and two others for new website.

    24. Vote-By-Mail Task Force:

    Don Draper absent. No report.

    25. Fundraising Committee:

    No report.

    26. Trademarks and Graphics:

    Trademark for Logo and “Democratic Voice.” Difficulty trademarking “Silicon Valley Democratic Club” due to other clubs including same name. Common law trademark for logo. Need horizontal logo, LezLi will create. Copyright added to website and publications.

    27. Report to Central Committee:

    Will report number of members elected to ADEM.

    29. Bylaws Update:

    Review revision of updated bylaws. Michele and Art will review and disseminate to board. May/June 1 final goal, place on April general meeting agenda.

    30. Fiscal Budget Planning:

    Bill Barrett will send out 2018 budget to board and board will determine if it can be duplicated for 2019. Bill Barrett, Kristen Lyn, Jeff Orloff, LezLi Logan to work on budget.

    President’s Welcome - President Art Cohen

    • Special Thanks to Bill Barrett for printing new member badges featuring our new club name/logo, and for making the extra effort to be able to accept payments for the dinner buffet.
    • Special Thanks to Sam Kumar and Mayuri Indian Cuisine for so generously providing their banquet facilities and service, free coffee and water, and offering a delicious buffet for purchase.
    • Special Thanks to Belinda Stow, Catherine Williams and David Donaldson for their work to coordinate and setup the meeting in our new venue.
    • Jennie Hutchinson introduced the Women’s Caucus Action of the Evening – postcards to stop Betsy Devos from destroying Title IX in cooperation with Enough is Enough Voter Project.
    • Art Cohen introduced our guest speaker for the evening: Morgan Hill Mayor Rich Constantine.

    Feature Presentation - Democracy: The Great Experiment Continues - Morgan Hill Mayor Rich Constantine

    • Mayor Constantine shared his rich history of service, path to political office, perspective on what it means to serve, and spoke on several issues specific to Morgan Hill (affordable housing, transportation, schools, etc.) offering insight on how they relate to these same issues in our larger South Bay community.

    Women’s Caucus Report - Vice President Jennie Hutchinson
    • Jennie Hutchinson spoke about the San Jose Women’s March Event, showing photos of SVDC Eboard Member Michele Dauber speaking at the event about the effort to Save Title IX and other SVDC members who marched and volunteered along with her. She introduced Women’s March San Jose President Jenny Bradanini, who is also a candidate for San Jose City Council District 10.
    • Jenny Bradanini spoke about the San Jose Women’s March Event, showing photos of the march and rally. An estimated 18,000 people attended the march this year. Jenny explained that despite the recent controversy with Women’s March, Inc. (also known as “National”), Women’s March San Jose (as well as California and Bay Area) are independent organizations who are organized and funded solely through local contributions and volunteers.

    New Website & Member Services - Corresponding Secretary LezLi Logan

    • LezLi Logan provided a demonstration and preview of the new website currently under development by the Transition Team. Some of the new features include: Increased security and ease-of-use for online interactions and payments, ability for all members to update their own contact information and membership data at any time, Easy online Membership renewal with automated reminders, Event registration with online payments and automated reminders, Fully responsive website, newsletter and emails. Easily read the newsletter on your mobile device!, Increased efficiency for club volunteers and security controls, Club Blogs and User Forums with moderation controls, and Compilation Calendar of Events with other Bay Area Progressive Groups

    • We will have committee signup sheets available at the next meeting in February. In the meantime, an online form is available on the current club website for members to sign-up to participate.
